i am a strong independent shipper who don’t need no canon
I feel like one of the biggest misconceptions out there is that all fanfic is written by 12 and 13 year olds
Like the other day I read a fanfic where Jason Todd is remodeling his kitchen and is concerned about wooden countertops because what if you get raw chicken on your wooden countertop?
You think a 13 year old thinks about countertops? Think again my friend that fic was written by an Adult
Fanfic: and they were soulmates
Me: oh my god they were soulmates
forget slow burn romance, give me slow burn found family. give me enemies to friends to siblings. tired, weary old mentors learning to live again for their plucky young apprentices. heroes sharing apartments after world saving adventures because they’re so used to living with each other. dramatic “oh shit” moments where one gets kidnapped and the other realizes “god, that’s my kid.” i want to sit and watch in agony for thirty chapters while two idiots slowly adopt each other, someone get on it
if Rey and Kylo were both women or both men, the Force bond wouldn’t be considered sexual.
like, Harry and Voldemort also had an involuntary, unwanted psychic bond, but nobody sexualized it.
take off your hetero goggles.
“Nobody sexualized it”
Buddy have you MET the Harry Potter fandom
They successfully sexualized the World’s Greasiest Child Abuser and the campus squid
Like I’m sympathetic to your cause and all but please think before you post
i’m sitting here wheezing with laughter bc i’m pretty sure that there’s at least one M rated fanfiction with every single character from HP. like, i am willing to bet some dollars that fuckin goyle and buckbeak and some minor character only mentioned in passing all have at least a drabble that’s dedicated to them fucking. buddy, this is the fandom that sexualised the house elf, even the goddamn sorting hat. nothing is sacred, everything is permitted.
it’s 2018 and here I am still in random moments overcome with emotion for my weird au severus snape who I never wanted to write and never wanted to like. why
when you make things nicer suddenly they hurt more and everything is terrible
me: i don’t like snape
inky: *writes snape well*
me: i like one snape.
>be me
>about 13 years old
>basically naivete incarnate still
>just discovered the world of fanfiction.net
>have an account and a few stories posted so far
>currently working on a fanfic of Spirited Away
>get a comment one day
>commenter asks if I can put lemons in my story
>I think it’s an odd request but will do anything to please a fan
>write the next chapter acknowledging the lemon request and say that the chapter WILL CONTAIN LEMONS
>about halfway through the chapter I wrote a giant duck running past the protagonist with an armful of lemons
>duck says “MY lemons” then runs off
>feel pleased with myself at having granted my fan’s request
>years later I find out there’s another meaning for lemon in the fanfic world
>lemons are sex scenes
>my commenter was asking me to put a sex scene in my story
>at 13 years old I unintentionally trolled the shit out of some random person
>whoops
While many people think fanfiction is about inserting sex into texts (like Tolkien’s) where it doesn’t belong, Brancher sees it differently: “I was desperate to read about sex that included great friendship; I was repurposing Tolkien’s text in order to do that. It wasn’t that friendship needed to be sexualized, it was that erotica needed to be … friendship-ized.” Many fanfiction writers write about sex in conjunction with beloved texts and characters not because they think those texts are incomplete, but because they’re looking for stories where sex is profound and meaningful. This is part of what makes fan fiction different from pornography: unlike pornography, fanfic features characters we already care deeply about, and who tend to already have long-standing and complex relationships with each other. It’s a genre of sexual subjectification: the very opposite of objectification. It’s benefits with friendship.

Oh dang that is spot on!
